primary students and ambassadors

Avonworth Primary Center welcomed a special visit from elementary counselor Ms. Minert and a group of fifth grade ambassadors as second graders prepared for their transition to the elementary school next year.

Students had the opportunity to ask questions, hear stories, and learn more about what to expect from current elementary students. The fifth grade ambassadors did a wonderful job showing leadership, kindness, and encouragement throughout the visit.

One of the most meaningful moments of the day was watching siblings reconnect and former students visit their previous teachers. The event created excitement and helped second graders feel more confident about the move to the elementary school.

A special thank you to Primary Center counselor Ms. Krepp for organizing such a thoughtful and memorable experience for our students.

As part of Remake Learning Days, Avonworth Primary Center welcomed incoming Kindergarten students and their families for a special Science Safari adventure on May 13, 2026. Families explored a variety of hands-on, safari-themed activities designed to spark creativity, curiosity, and collaboration.

Throughout the evening, students had the opportunity to meet future teachers and classmates while participating in engaging STEM-based experiences centered around animals found on a safari. From creative projects to interactive learning stations, the event provided families with an exciting preview of life at APC.

The Science Safari was a wonderful opportunity for families to connect, learn together, and build excitement for the start of the new school year this fall.

glow room featuring artwork glowing

On April 29, APC families were invited to experience a “Universe of Imagination,” a special evening that celebrated the connection between art and science through student creativity and performance.

From the moment visitors entered the Glow Room and heard songs from outer space, they were transported into another dimension filled with imagination and discovery. The halls were transformed with student-created moons, stars, rocket ships, planets, and portraits of astronauts, showcasing the talents of every student in the building.

Kindergarten and First Grade students performed space-themed songs on stage, while Second Grade students debuted an original song created alongside the school’s resident artist. Throughout the evening, APC families filled the halls praising the incredible artwork, performances, and creativity on display.

wide shot of orchestra

Second grade students recently traveled downtown to Heinz Hall for a special “Meet the Orchestra” educational program. Organized by music education teacher Amaya Williams, the experience gave students the opportunity to learn about the four sections of the orchestra while enjoying a live performance in one of Pittsburgh’s most iconic music venues.

Led by conductor Moon Doh, the interactive program introduced students to the sounds and roles of different instruments throughout the orchestra. Students engaged with the music while gaining a deeper appreciation for the arts and live performance.

The field trip provided a memorable hands-on learning experience and an exciting opportunity for students to experience orchestral music beyond the classroom.

children gathered showing engineering glider

Second grade students took part in Remake Learning Days through a hands-on STEM activity led by Investigations Teacher Mrs. Besterman. Students designed and created their own Hoop Gliders before bringing them back to their classrooms to test their distance and air time skills.

The activity gave students the opportunity to explore creativity, problem-solving, measurement, and engineering concepts in an engaging and collaborative way.

In addition to the classroom learning experience, several teachers were also able to connect with other classrooms from schools across the region that were participating in Remake Learning Days, further expanding the collaborative learning experience for students and staff alike.
